# I. Game Background

Elden Ring was built by FromSoftware together with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, who co-created the world. The story unfolds in The Lands Between — once blessed by the Erdtree, but after the Elden Ring shattered, the demigods waged war over its shards (Great Runes), and the world fell into decay.

You play a Tarnished, summoned back to the Lands Between to gather Great Runes, mend the Ring, and become Elden Lord. The game is famed for high-freedom open world + hardcore Soulslike combat with almost no forced guidance — exploration is the point.

This guide defaults to no spoilers of boss names or story direction — only mechanics and progression ideas.

# II. Core Mechanics

  • Open-world Soulslike: no quest arrow; explore freely between Sites of Grace (checkpoints); if stuck, go around.
  • Roll & Parry: rolling has i-frames (core dodge); small shields / fists can parry some enemies, triggering a critical riposte.
  • Ash of War: attach weapon skills and affinity changes to weapons, defining your build direction.
  • Spirit Ashes: spend FP to summon aids (wolves, Mimic Tear, etc.) — the strongest fault-tolerance tool for newcomers.
  • Torrent (ghost horse): double-jump, fast repositioning, summonable in boss fights — a positioning lifesaver.
  • Sites of Grace & leveling: graces double as save points, leveling, and respec (needs Larval Tear); free stat allocation defines your Build.
  • Co-op / PvP: ground summon signs let you call other players (co-op) or be invaded by red phantoms (PvP); use "invader" items to invade actively.
  • Shadow of the Erdtree (DLC): a separate map "Land of Shadow," harder, with new weapons / sorceries / remembrance bosses.

# III. Beginner Tips

  1. Start as "Vagabond" or "Samurai": high HP / good weapons, strong survival, less early death (see comparison below).
  2. Prioritize Vigor: HP is always the #1 stat in Soulslikes — aim 30–40 before level 40.
  3. Go around when stuck: can't beat Limgrave? Go level in Liurnia, Caelid, or the Siofra underground — level-gating is the most reliable crutch.
  4. Get Spirit Ashes early: "Lone Wolf Ashes" from Stormhill Tombs; summoning wolves in boss fights absorbs huge damage.
  5. Use Torrent often: double-jump clears terrain and attacks — core for traversal and dodging.
  6. Summoning help is fine: golden summon signs at graces call other players; use them boldly when stuck on a boss.
  7. Don't respec recklessly: Larval Tears are rare — commit to a build before dumping points.

# Starting Class Selection

Class Rating Traits Best For
Vagabond ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ High HP, heavy load, great starting gear Strength / Faith
Astrologer ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong starting spells, long range Pure Sorcery
Samurai ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Uchigatana bleed, longbow ranged Dex / Bleed
Prisoner ⭐⭐⭐ Estoc + Magic, versatile Dex/Int hybrid
Prophet ⭐⭐⭐ Starts with healing incantation Pure Faith

🛡️ New player tip: pick Vagabond or Samurai for survivability. Class only affects early game; everything is flexible later.

# IV. Advanced Tips & Strategy

  • Build directions: Bleed (Rivers of Blood + Poison Mist), pure Sorcery (Meteorite Staff + Rock Sling), Faith warrior (Flame / Erdtree), Strength bonk (Great Club) — see Builds.
  • Parry timing: humanoid / small enemies have wide parry windows; large bosses favor roll + Spirit Ashes; practice parry to speed runs drastically.
  • Skip routes: use level gaps (underground / snowfield farming), Mimic Tear can solo most bosses.
  • Affinity choice: "Cold" / "Blood" infusions are most versatile, paired with corresponding stats.
  • DLC prep: before entering Land of Shadow, aim level 120+, upgrade +20 (normal) / +9 (special) or it's brutally hard.
  • Switch 2 new content: Tarnished Edition (Aug 28, 2026) adds 2 new classes (Knight of Ides, Heavy Knight), new armor, and Torrent customization; veterans can buy the "Tarnished Pack" standalone (~$4.99).

# V. FAQ

Q1: The game is too hard — am I just not suited for it? A: The Soulslike threshold is "learning enemy moves," not raw mechanics. Vagabond + Spirit Ashes + summons let ordinary players finish. Stuck? Level up and go around.

Q2: How to enter the DLC? Need to buy it? A: Shadow of the Erdtree is paid DLC (June 21, 2024) — must purchase; enter from a specific grace after defeating a certain main-story boss.

Q3: Can Switch 2 play it? Any difference? A: Yes. Tarnished Edition (Aug 28, 2026) bundles base game + DLC + new classes / armor / Torrent cosmetics. Other-platform veterans can buy the Tarnished Pack standalone for the new content.

Q4: Does online cost money? A: PS / Xbox need membership (PS Plus / Game Pass Core); PC co-op is free.

Q5: How long for 100% achievements? A: ~150–200h, including multiple endings and hidden bosses.

Q6: Main story first or explore first? A: Explore Limgrave's outskirts to level up, get the horse and Spirit Ashes, then tackle the first major boss (Margit).
