# I. Game Background
Tears of the Kingdom is the direct sequel to Breath of the Wild. The story picks up right after the prior game: Hyrule Castle lifts into the sky, a mysterious "cataclysm" descends, and while Link and Zelda explore the depths, something goes wrong and Zelda vanishes. You control Link, wielding the new "power of the left hand" to adventure across sky, surface, and depths — three layers of the world — uncovering Hyrule's ancient secrets.
Its biggest feature is a physics-sandbox creator: the prior "Sheikah Slate" abilities are replaced by new "Zonai Devices," letting you build almost any vehicle, machine, or contraption with extreme freedom.
This guide defaults to no spoilers of main story or key region names — only mechanics and exploration ideas.
# II. Core Mechanics
- Four abilities (from the left hand):
- Ultrahand: grab / fuse objects — core for building vehicles, bridges, machines.
- Fuse: fuse weapons / materials onto gear, customizing attack and properties (e.g. stick + rock = hammer).
- Ascend: rise straight up through the surface above you — a puzzle / climb god-skill.
- Recall: rewind an object's motion — "ride" falling rocks / traps back upward.
- Zonai Devices: battery-powered carts, fans, rockets, stabilizers, steering sticks, etc., combined with Ultrahand for vehicles / aircraft.
- Autobuild: records structures you've built for one-click reconstruction — key to late-game efficiency.
- Three-layer map: sky islands (start), surface (BotW Hyrule), depths (dark caves needing light resources).
- Shrines & Koroks: shrines teach abilities / grant hearts; Koroks raise weapon / shield / bow capacity.
- Cooking & elixirs: ingredient combos yield healing / attack / defense / temperature effects — see Complete Recipes.
# III. Beginner Tips
- Master the four abilities first: practice the sky-island tutorial thoroughly, especially Ultrahand and Ascend — they're mandatory all game.
- Fuse to build weapons: any stick + material becomes a weapon; don't scoff at low early attack — Fuse is the key.
- Explore the depths early: the depths hold "Brightbloom Seeds" and abundant Zonai ore — materials for batteries and devices.
- Collect Koroks for capacity: weapons / shields / bows break easily; more Koroks = bigger carry cap, the most practical upgrade.
- Learn basic vehicles: fan + platform = wind cart, rocket + platform = aircraft — double your traversal efficiency.
- Keep cooking stocked: make a few "defense + attack" dishes before heading out — huge boss-fight fault tolerance.
- Use Ascend & Recall: when stuck on terrain, these two often work wonders, easier than climbing.
# Core Mechanic: Fuse (recommended combos)
| Base | Recommended Fuse | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Master Sword | Silver Lynel Horn | +55 ATK, extremely sharp |
| Zora Spear | Ice Keese Wing | Double damage when wet + freeze |
| Gerudo Scimitar | Silver Lynel Horn | High durability + massive damage |
| Royal Guard's Shield | Cannon | Shield parry = long-range artillery |
| Rocket Shield | Rocket | Shield jump = instant liftoff |
# IV. Advanced Tips & Strategy
- Blueprint reuse: after building common vehicles, save to blueprint and summon instantly — skip re-assembling each time.
- Zonai battery management: batteries upgrade via "Zonai Cores" in the depths; prioritize enough for flight / driving.
- Fuse ideas: ranged with "bow + fruit" auto-aim; break guard with "hammer + rock"; elemental with "weapon + ice/fire/lightning fruit."
- Depth farming: depths enemies drop high-tier materials — the main source for endgame gear.
- amiibo (supported from 2025): Sidon / Tulin / Yunobo / Riju amiibo grant exclusive gear; usable in Switch 2 Edition.
- Speedrun tricks: a mastered "rocket shield jump" via Ultrahand ignores terrain to reach targets directly — a world-record-level technique.
# V. FAQ
Q1: Can I play TotK without playing Breath of the Wild? A: Yes — the story is self-contained and newcomer-friendly; playing the prequel just adds resonance with the map and characters.
Q2: What's different in the Switch 2 version? A: Switch 2 Edition (from June 2025) improves frame rate / resolution and supports ZELDA NOTES (official app: map markers, daily bonuses). Old Switch saves carry over.
Q3: Is there DLC? A: TotK has no paid DLC (unlike BotW's DLC pass). Only free fix patches since (latest Ver. 1.4.3, Feb 2026).
Q4: Weapons keep breaking — what do I do? A: It's a series trademark. More Koroks for capacity + use cheap materials as consumables via Fuse; save precious weapons for bosses.
Q5: Depths too dark? A: "Brightbloom Seeds" scattered in the depths light up areas; carry "glowing / firefly" type materials for temporary light.
Q6: Need internet? A: Fully offline single-player. ZELDA NOTES needs internet and a Nintendo account, but is optional.
